As Bishop Wester has recognized, Stewardship should be “Our Way of Life”. It is a very tangible way of living our faith through the sharing of our time, talents and treasure. According to Bishop Wester, stewardship is “being in right relationship with God.” When we are in a right relationship with God, we recognize that everything we have in life is a gift from God and is intended to draw us closer to Him. When we embrace this reality, we come to understand that stewardship keeps us focused on God as the center of our lives. He gives us life and is the companion on our journey. Stewardship then is a way of looking at God and responding to Him.
According to Bishop Wester, the overarching theme of stewardship should be one of gratitude. When we embrace stewardship as a way of life, we become even more grateful for all that we are and all that we have. Our natural response to this great generosity from God, is our own response of love. We love God for His generosity and we express our gratitude by imitating God’s great generosity. “As we share our gifts generously and joyfully with one another, we are imitating God himself and thus giving him the highest form of praise possible. This praise, or thanksgiving, is at the heart of what it means to be a Christian as we give freely to one another.”
Bishop Wester has noted the “interesting twist” that happens when we give of ourselves in gratitude to God. The more that we give of ourselves to others, the more room there is for God to give to us. This in turn allows us to give even more generously. Bishop Wester likens this to the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. “We can never exhaust God’s gifts and, no matter how much we give, God will never be outdone in generosity.”
We hope that you will explore your own relationship with God and allow Him to work abundantly in your life as you express your gratitude through the sharing of your time, talents and treasure.
